The artificial sweeteners that are widely seen as a way to combat obesity and diabetes could, in part, be contributing to the global epidemic of these conditions.

An article recently published in Nature indicates that artificial sweeteners are likely to be disrupting the microbiome balance in the gut leading to an increase in ability to extract calories from you food. The primary bacteria in question are Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. As the graph below shows, artificial sweeteners are actually more likely to cause obesity than sugar.
